Magnepan 1.7i"This is a genuine Hall of Famer, andan easy pick for TAS 2021 Budget Product of the Year."In Issue 107, JV (Jonathan Valin - the absolute sound) selected Magnepan's tall, skinny, three-way, full range, quasi-ribbon, dipole MG 1.7 floorstander as one of his favorite loudspeakers of the last 70 years. High in resolution, low in distortion, with enough bass and treble (of superlatively high quality) to satisfy anyone save a headbanger, and a midrange that reproduces well-recorded voices and acoustic instruments with jaw-dropping realism, it is one of those "sweet-spot" wonders that pops up every decade or two. The 1.7 gave you a generous taste of everything its bigger and more expensive Maggie brothers were capable of for a fraction of what you'd pay for the same wonderment in a top-line dynamic speaker. In his review of Maggie's latest version of this classic, the 1.7i, long time TAS reviewer John Nork (who purchased the review pair) was in complete agreement.John Nork 1.7i reviewTrim OptionSpecifications 1.7i SpecificationsDescription3-Way,Full-Range, Quasi-RibbonFreq. Magnepan 20.720.7These Maggies' magical ability to transport listeners to a different space and time, and to there realistically recreate (with lifelike scope and size) the sound of acoustic instruments and the venue they were recorded in is extraordinary. It almost goes without saying (since these are Magnepans), but the 20.7s are also incredibly good values, although you're going to have to bring a lot of power to this party, and you're going to need a good deal of room to house two speakers the size and width of a couple of NFL linebackers. Magnepan 2.7iThe MG2.7i’s are a pair of 3-way, full-range, Magneplanar loudspeakers. Both the Bass and Midrange sections are comprised of aluminum foil. Often referred to as “quasi-ribbon,” the foil is adhered to the Mylar diaphragm which is visible through the front of the fabric cover. The True Ribbon Tweeter is also comprised of aluminum foil however it is not mounted to a substrate but rather suspended freely. The MG2.7i’s reproduce sound by introducing an AC signal to: the conductor foil on the diaphragm which reacts to the fixed array of magnet strips mounted behind the Mylar; and the tweeter foil which reacts to the magnet channels on either side of it. This reaction vibrates the diaphragm/foil projecting sound as a dipole, both forward and backward.ReviewsThe 2023 Capitol Audio Fest: Alan TaffelThe 2023 Capitol Audio Fest: Jacob Heilbrunn on Show HighlightsTrim OptionsSpecifications MG2.7i Description3-Way, Full-Range, Quasi-RibbonFreq. Magnepan 30.7This giant, four-panel (two panels per side), four-way, ribbon/quasi-ribbon line source loudspeaker from Magnepan is the best Maggie JV (Jonathan Valin - the absolute sound) has heard, which is tantamount to saying it is the best planar JV has ever heard (and right up there with the best six-figure dynamics JV has heard). With its highly coherent wave-launch, free standing imaging, vast soundstage, phenomenal resolution of inner detail, lightning transient response, incomparable naturalness of timbre, and total lack of box coloration and diffraction, the 30.7 is markedly less “there” as a sound source (and markedly more lifelike on voice and acoustic instruments) than almost every dynamic-speaker-in-a-box, no matter its price. The best buy in an ultra-high-end loudspeaker (and one of the best high-end buys of all time), the 30.7 earned JV’s highest, most ecstatic recommendation and TAS’ 2017 Overall Product of the Year award. If you have sufficient room, amplifier, and permission from your spouse—and don’t listen to a steady diet of heavy metal—you cannot do better.Does the 30.7 Require a Big Sound Room? The ideal line source would be like a narrow pole---very narrow and from floor-to-ceiling (with no mass). With real-world materials, Maggies aspire to this ideal.Imagine if we repacked the 30.7 tweeter/midrange in a 10 inch-wide panel and sold it with small dynamic woofers (that could be hidden). Such a hybrid would have all the problems that have plagued all hybrids, but there is no acoustical reason it would not work in a small room (the only issue would be aesthetics.)However, the bass panels of all Maggies are big. The 30.7 bass panel is huge. And, yes, there is a acoustical problem with putting a big woofer in a small room: excessive midbass (deep bass is seldom a problem). We have solved the problem of excessive midbass. The 30.7 has adjustable midbass control (in addtion to mid and high frequency adjustments). If you can handle the aesthetic issues of big panels, there are no acoustical reasons you can not have a 30.7 in a smaller room. A word about setup: whether the tweeter is on the inside or outside, the tweeter should not be closer to the listener than the bass section. Measuring from your seated position, if the bass panel is 10 feet, 6 inches, the tweeter should be at least 10 feet, 7 inches (think in distance, not angles). What is Power Response and why is it Important to Music Reproduction?Wendell Diller, explains why Maggies have superior power response and how you can conduct this listening test at your local dealer in this video.Trim OptionsReviews2018 Editors' Choice, The Absolute Sound, March 2018“Overall Product of the Year” (along with the $685,000 Wilson WAMM Master Chronosonic) in The Absolute Sound magazine (January issue 279, 2018). Part One and Part Two of the review."The 30.7 strikes me as a remarkable design achievement; it takes everything we have ever liked about the Magnepan sound to a whole different level—a level where both the richness and realism of recorded music are raised to extraordinary levels" - The Absolute Sound"The fact is that the 30.7s deliver sound quality competitive with (and in some respects superior to) loudspeakers ranging from two to nearly ten times their price" - HifiplusMagnepan’s Ultra High-End 30.7 Magneplanar Loudspeaker - Widescreen ReviewSpecifications 30.7 SpecificationsDescriptionFreq. Magnepan 3.7iThe 3.7iThe 3.7i is the first model in our floor-standing lineup to incorporate our famous ribbon tweeter along with quasi-ribbon bass and midrange drivers. As Jonathan Valin says "Maggie's three-way, true-ribbon /quasi-ribbon planar 3.7i successfully addresses three issues that have long plagued "true-ribbon" Maggies: the seamless integration of that ribbon; the retention of detail and dynamic range at relatively low volume levels; and the reduction of "Maggie grain." The solution of these problems combined with the famous virtues of true-ribbon Magnepans produces what is, in JV's opinion, a best buy....." Trim OptionsSpecifications 3.7 SpecificationsFreq. Magnepan .7The .7 — High-End Audio where space is at a premiumAn in-house favorite at Magnepan, the .7 model is the go-to speaker for those who are looking for world class sound at a reasonable price."Within minutes, I realized that the Magnepan .7 could image with the best speakers ever, and were going to take my music listening somewhere it had never quite been before.""Whenever there is something fundamentally correct in a designers approach, the chances become extra good that the products of his or her efforts will reveal to a wide range of listeners fundamental musical truths. And for me, the best thing about musical truths is that they never change or go out of fashion." Magnepan CC5An experienced Maggie reviewer, Michael Trei, Sound + Vision, November 2010 said it best---"No matter what type of movie I played, dialogue clarity was always exemplary. I would rate the CC 5 as the most focused and transparent center channel speaker I've yet encountered, with none of the off-axis frequency response anomalies you hear with some dynamic models. The CC5 was able to lock the dialogue to the center of the screen with razor-sharp precision over a wide arc of listening positions, and it made even voices buried way down in the mix easy to comprehend."This was no easy task. All speaker companies must deal with the same issues for home theater. The space and height available for the center channel speaker is dictated by the video. For a speaker designer, it is the equivalent of "tying one arm behind their back." The center channel speaker does approximately 60-70% of the "heavy lifting". It is ironic that the most important speaker for home theater has major design constraints. Most ribbon and electrostatic speaker companies employ a dynamic midbass coupler to cover the range between the subwoofer and the ribbon or electrostatic driver. In our opinion, that is an unacceptable compromise for the most important speaker in the home theater system. Magnepan employs the front left/right speakers or the DWM Bass Panels to achieve full range Maggie sound for the center channel (See the CC 5 or CCR manuals).Achieving center channel bassSince the CC 5 is a "small" center channel speaker, special precautions must be taken to achieve full-range Maggie center channel performance without sacrificing sound quality. Please see the CC 5 manual. Is home theater a high priority to you? Many of our customers indicate that home theater is of less importance than music. We understand because we are the same. However, if you have a dual-purpose music/home theater system, Magnepan has an option that will improve your 2-channel playback as well as home theater. Visit our Tri-Center webpage.Trouble finding a place for a center channel speaker?Wall mounting-- The CC 5 has provisions for wall-mounting below a video monitor, using a small omni-mount cantilever. See manual for installation instructions.Dual Center- The photo below is of a demonstration in a hotel during a Consumer Electronic Show. A pair of Magneplanar on-wall models immediately flanking a video monitor provide a dual center channel array which has advantages over a single center channel speaker.A pair of our on-wall speakers achieves a center channel image in the same manner as a stereo system achieves a center image. By angling the speakers approximately 30 degrees to the wall, the center channel speaker on the left of the video monitor is on-axis with the viewer off to the right — and consequently is louder than the center channel speaker on the right of the monitor (which is closer to the viewer). This "pulls" the audio image to the left and keeps the dialog centered on the screen better than point source speakers.Ask about our Disposable Speaker Stand. This speaker stand allows you to easily move our on-wall models about the room to determine the best location before making your permanent installation.
